Feature your story
Share your hunt with Australia’s hunting community.
Australian Hunter is built on the stories of real hunters. If you’ve had a hunt worth sharing, we want to hear about it.
Every issue we feature reader-submitted stories from across Australia and beyond. Whether it’s a hard-earned fallow buck, a remote Territory buffalo, an international adventure or a first hunt with the family, the best stories are the ones lived in the field.
Selected submissions may be featured in the Australian Hunter magazine, on the Australian Hunter website or in other SSAA publications and media.
If you’d prefer your story to be published under a pseudonym, please let us know in your submission and we’ll keep your details private.
What we’re looking for
We’re looking for honest, detailed stories that reflect safe, ethical and responsible hunting. Tell the story from start to finish, including the conditions, the challenge, the outcome and what made the hunt memorable.
Stories that focus on the experience, not just the result, tend to resonate most.
All hunting and firearm content must reflect lawful and responsible practices, including safe firearm handling, respect for the animal and care for the environment.
Submission requirements
- Story length: Around 1500 words for a full feature, unless otherwise discussed with the Editor
- Photos: Up to 15 separate high-resolution image files
- Captions: A caption for each image, at the bottom of the story Word doc, including the relevant file name or number
- Originality: Your story must be your own work and not previously published
- Presentation: All content must reflect a respectful approach to hunting, the animal and environment.
Photos
Clear, sharp, well-lit images are preferred. Field images, hunting scenes, landscapes, equipment and respectful trophy photos all help tell the story.
Please be mindful of how harvested animals are presented. Avoid photos showing excessive blood or placing the animal in a disrespectful position. Images should reflect hunting in a positive, ethical and responsible way.
When firearms are shown, they must be pointed in a safe direction and away from the camera. Where appropriate, photos should also show safe and responsible use of hearing and eye protection.
Hunt and equipment details
Include as much of the following as you can:
- Species, sex, location and general region
- Hunt type, such as free range, station, guided, walk and stalk or similar
- Season, conditions and terrain
- Shot distance and placement
- Firearm or bow, optics, ammunition or broadhead
- Clothing, footwear or gear that played a meaningful role.
Product reviews
If you’re interested in reviewing a product supplied by a company, distributor or manufacturer, please contact the Editor before undertaking the review or approaching any business on behalf of Australian Hunter.
Contributors are welcome to submit reviews of products they have bought and used themselves. These should be practical, honest and relevant to hunters.
Recipe submissions
If you’ve turned your harvest into something worth eating, we want that too.
Australian Hunter regularly features field-to-table recipes from hunters who know how to make the most of what they bring home.
Include the species and cut, full ingredient list, step-by-step method, serving size, cooking time and at least 2 to 3 photos of the finished dish. Recipes don’t need to be fancy, they need to be good.
Get featured
If you have a hunting or outdoors social media account you’d like featured alongside your story (at the discretion of the Editor), include your handle and platform in your submission. We enjoy connecting our readers with the wider Australian hunting community.
