Pork with sweet and sour sauce

This pork with sweet and sour sauce is a simple, satisfying dish with crisp fried pork and a quick homemade sauce. The pork is seasoned with soy sauce, red wine, salt and pepper, then fried twice for extra texture before being coated in a tangy sauce made from barbecue or tomato sauce, vinegar, sugar and cornflour. Serve it hot with rice or vegetables for an easy sweet-savoury meal that beats the bottled stuff.

Serves: 2 people
Duration: 2 hours 30 minutes

Ingredients

Main ingredients

  • 500g pork – cubed
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon red wine
  • salt and pepper – to taste
  • oil for deep frying

  • 2 tablespoons barbecue/tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • ½ tablespoon cornflour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar

Method

  1. Combine the pork, soy sauce and red wine; season and mix well.
  2. Heat the oil in a wok, add the pork mixture and cook, stirring occasionally, until it’s just done. Remove, drain and then fry the pork again, which will make it crisp.
  3. Heat the barbecue/tomato sauce, vinegar and 1 tablespoon of water until boiling.
  4. Blend the cornflour with the remaining water and add to the sauce with the sugar. Stir until it thickens, then remove from the heat.
  5. Pour the sweet and sour sauce over the pork and serve hot.
